How to Care for Solid Wood Furniture: Practical Tips

Solid wood furniture is valued for its grain, natural character and longevity. Caring for it does not require a complicated routine, but a few everyday habits help protect its appearance over time.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry it. Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive cleaning agents, which can damage the surface finish.

Keep wooden tables away from prolonged direct heat and standing water. Use coasters for glasses and protective mats for hot dishes. Wipe up spills promptly, particularly around the edges and joins.

Because wood responds naturally to changes in temperature and humidity, place furniture away from radiators and avoid very dry or damp rooms where possible. Small seasonal changes in the wood can be normal.

The appropriate maintenance oil or finish depends on how the piece was originally treated. Before re-oiling or repairing a surface, check the manufacturer's care guidance or ask the maker which products are compatible.
